Squirrels on the loose is a project inspired by (written) correspondence in between two girls, months after their first encounter.
Encounter - was by chance
Words . randomly spoken
Movement - relived
First encounter happened in Paris, on a way to Asia. First encounter lasted only a few days. It was short, intensive... and tattooed for future.
Letters write about travel. Transformation. People they were meeting on the way. Masks they have been taking off by coming back.
You start alone. All of a sudden, you meet someone. Then you separate again.
And each encounter, you are you. But you have choice to choose a role.
"I love this imagery of the bird. I can see it beautifully applied to
dance and it makes me think of how some of us are just wired to fly
around, and yet we always need to return to the nest at some point for
nourishment and to give back of what we have received." Anne
"I mean, it really is about travel... and transformation, and in my case... about the bird. And of course, some people can see some crazy squirrels jumping around... but in fact... it's about a lot of things.
Maybe even your trip to Iran." Maja
"My brain is a bit off track, however. In this sort of state of
mind I think it is possible both to touch genius and to touch madness,
or perhaps both at once, and who is to say that they aren't one and the
same?!" Anne
"And after all this long writing, I still have no idea what do write to a theater booklet." Maja
Maja Drobac is a graduated dancer from Amsterdamse Hoogelschoole voor de Kunsten (Theaterschool in Amsterdam) since 2005.
She has danced a year with Magpie Music and Dance Company, an improvisation company based in Amsterdam. She has presented “Satu” (a dance video) as her first independent project as part of Magpie Company, and “Squirrels on the loose” is her first independent project made for theater stage.
Presently she is studying for the second year Bharatanatyam (Classical Indian Dance) in India. |
